Govt. Edward College , Department of Political Science Professor Md. Abdul Hamid The Department of Political Science is one of the major and prestigious departments of Pabna Government Edward College. BA courses were introduced in 1940, and since then, the department has grown as a distinct academic unit. Honors and Master’s programs were introduced in 1987 and 1995, respectively, under the affiliation of the National University. At present, 12 teachers are serving in this department (Professor – 1, Associate Professors – 3, Assistant Professors – 4, Lecturers – 4). After more than a hundred years of academic progress, the HSC course was discontinued in 1997. However, in 2015, the college authority reinstated the HSC program due to the growing demand for higher secondary education and the lack of quality educational institutions in the region. This reinstatement was welcomed with enthusiasm by students and people from all walks of life in Pabna. Around 2,000 students are studying in the Honors and Master’s programs. At the HSC level, a large number of students study Civics under this department. The Honors and Master’s results are highly satisfactory. Last year, 23 students obtained first class in the MSS examination. The department offers many auxiliary courses related to political science under the National University syllabus. These include Approaches to the Study of Politics; Peace and Conflict Studies; Research Methodology and Statistics; Environment and Development; Legislative Process in Bangladesh; Globalization, Regionalism, and International Financial Institutions; Government in East Asia (China, Japan, and South Korea); Government and Politics in South Asia; Introduction to Public Policy; etc. The Department of Political Science arranges presentation classes and study tours to enhance students’ knowledge and skills. The department also organizes lectures by distinguished scholars. Students have access to seminar books, film shows, and study group activities. The department provides various facilities, such as multimedia-equipped classrooms and an ICT lab. A good number of students and graduates are employed in government, semi-government, and non-government organizations after completing their studies. Teachers and students of this department actively participate in various extracurricular activities such as music, drama, recitation, debates, seminars, games, and sports. As a result, the teacher–student relationship remains healthy and cordial. Our seminar library is enriched with sufficient academic books, autobiographies, magazines, periodicals, and rare, valuable books. Despite limited resources, the department offers optimum service to its students. It ensures the timely completion of the syllabus by strictly following a well-designed academic calendar and course plan. Special attention is given to students of HSC classes. Ensuring maximum attendance from HSC to the Master’s level is emphasized, and we always follow the directives of the college authority in this regard. We conduct test exams, in-course exams, term papers, and tutorial exams on schedule. Orientation classes are also arranged to orient students properly. To increase job opportunities for students, the department provides guidance for BCS and NGO job preparation. Every year, a good number of students secure positions in public service and other prestigious sectors. We are proud of the Department of Political Science. We are firmly committed to strengthening its existing reputation and ensuring high-quality education in the years to come. Professor, Department of Political Science, Government Edward College
